The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) is a Quality Council established in 2010 in terms of the Skills Development Act. Its role is to oversee the design, implementation, assessment and certification of occupational qualifications on the Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework (OQSF).
The QCTO is one of three Quality Councils (QCs) responsible for a part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Collectively, the Quality Councils and the South African Qualifications Authority (whose role is to advance the objectives of the NQF and oversee its development and implementation), all work for the good of both learners and employers. Another important role for the QCTO is to offer guidance to service providers, who must be accredited by the QCTO, to offer occupational qualifications.
Following the format of the organizing framework for Occupations (QFO), occupational qualifications are categorised into the eight major employment groups.
Our vision is to qualify a skilled and capable workforce; our mission is to effectively and efficiently manage the occupational qualifications sub-framework in order to set standards, develop and quality assure national occupational qualifications for all who want a trade or occupation, and where appropriate, professions.
CTIA’s foundational course (the Certificate in Culinary Arts) and intermediary courses (the Diploma in Culinary Arts; and Diploma in Patisserie) provide any young chef with the essentials needed to embark on a successful and satisfying culinary career.
These courses are accredited and verified by City & Guilds: a UK-based education organisation with global reach. Recognised in more than 80 countries worldwide, these qualifications provide students with a solid skills benchmark and a powerful knowledge base.

At CTIA, we realised that once our innovative young chefs had grown confident in mastering the building blocks, they were looking for some culinary dynamite to further hone their skills and launch their careers in a way that is relevant to today’s complex demands, developments and dynamics. Exclusively offered by CTIA, these courses fill a conspicuous gap in the local culinary education landscape, and give our students a unique advantage. We continually refine and adapt the substance of these courses to ensure that our students stay ahead of the curve.
The Chartered Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) is one of the UK’s leading professional membership and awarding bodies for tourism and hospitality qualifications. Its mission is to develop and add value to careers in the tourism and hospitality industry all around the world. The CTH is endorsed by important industry figures and brands, including Tsogo Sun, Radisson Edwardian and Thistle hotels, the Dhaka Sheraton and many more.
The Chartered Institute of Tourism and Hospitality (ITH) is the Southern African cousin of the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) in the United Kingdom, established in 1982. The ITH is the CTH’s representative in southern Africa. In this role, the ITH accredits training providers and supports them in rolling out the CTH’s UK-registered qualifications. The ITH also handles student and assessment registration on the behalf of the CTH. Please note that the full time and part time mode of study is only offered at the Centurion Campus.
Located in the heart of Lucerne, a vibrant and beautiful city in Switzerland, the Business Hospitality Management School (BHMS) is one of the world’s leading hospitality schools. A first-of-its-kind partnership between CTIA and BHMS opens up a world of new opportunities for students, as it allows those who have completed the International Advanced Management Diploma with CTIA to further their studies at this prestigious Swiss school.
Upon completing the 24-month course at CTIA, students may enrol for a third and final year at BHMS to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts. The course builds on students’ existing culinary competencies and experiences to deepen and hone practical, leadership and business skills. Highlights of the programme include inter-disciplinary management of food service operations, including sought-after skills such as customer service, resource planning and management. New product development, molecular cuisine, technology applications and managing teams in the kitchen labs, provide additional capstone learning before students progress to their final industry training and job placement. As part of the course, students will also undertake a paid six-month-long internship, with remuneration in Swiss Francs. This is a guaranteed placement upon enrolment at BHMS.
BHMS is an EduQua-certified private institution – EduQua being the Swiss Association for Quality & Management Systems, which certifies Swiss colleges and education institutions in the country. BHMS has a partnership agreement with The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in the UK for granting the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Hotel & Hospitality Management in Switzerland. The Times Good University Guide 2010 named The Robert Gordon University as the best modern university in the UK.
